Website layouts for maximum profit from AdSense
I wrote this post a while back. The content can still be relevant but the information I've linked to may not be available.
How to make the most money from your website with Google AdSense is a question that is often asked by AdSense publishers.
Graywolf has published an interesting series of articles on how to layout your webpage for maximum profit (eg from AdSense or similar ads). The conclusions are based around what Google says about the best position for AdSense ads.
It goes like this. In Google’s case, a specific AdSense ‘hotspot’ is left of the page and ‘above the fold’. Therefore, place your AdSense here to maximise profit. This takes up one of the ‘conventional’ places for a list of navigation links. Therefore, place these in the masthead or, more unconventionally, on the right of the page.
The right hand side of the page for navigation links goes against the conventional wisdom† but if you want to make money through AdSense on your website, surely it’s worth it?!
Of course, try these suggestions, but we also suggest that you experiment with different AdSense placements. What works for one website may not work for another. Why not use one placement for a month and change it the next month?
There’s some great advice in the Graywolf articles about fixed width and fluid web page layouts as well.
† Compared to a few years ago, more websites are placing their navigation on the right, but the most common places are still left or top.
